What is it that makes the difference between someone who is happy and someone who isn’t?

Your body has five senses; sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. But often what is not recognized is the importance of the inner senses or the senses of your soul, namely; intuition, foresight, and self-trust. It is often highlighted that the most common difference between those people who are happy and those who are not has more to do with their use of their inner senses, probably more so than their use of the physical senses.

Using your inner senses and finely tuning them to align with your work allows you to honour your truth and stand firm by your ideas, feelings, intuition and the aspirations you have in life. In doing so, you are less likely to be sidetracked or thrown off course. Your self worth will increase along with your confidence and self-belief.

Of course there will be times when someone challenges your way of thinking and being or throws you a few negatives to try and knock you down … and at those times you have a choice as to whether they affect you or not. People will either affect you or infect you. I know which I’d rather to choose to be with.

Being true to yourself and honouring your intuition, foresight and self-trust is definitely the key to happiness.

Looking back at happy memories and smiling helps us to remember things more vividly and has a positive effect on our well-being too.

In turn we feel more optimistic and motivated. When you remember previous good times you’ve had, suddenly everything seems much brighter in the moment too.

So take some time out to look back and remember how you felt in the moment. Go through old photo albums, pick up a trinket or memento you’ve kept hold of and recall the events of that time.

There’s a certain magic in a déjà vu moment … we’re always so focused on where we’re going and what we want to achieve that often we forget from where we came and just how far we’ve come.

Looking at the morning newspaper to his surprise and horror, a man read his name in the obituary column. The newpaper had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. The man’s first response was shock. Am I dead or alive? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. He began to read the obituary, “Dynamite King Dies.” And “He was the merchant of death.”

Yes, this man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words “merchant of death,” he asked himself a question, “Is this how I am going to be remembered?”

He got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values. He made a decision that from that day onwards he would work towards peace. The man’s name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.

How often do we get in touch with our feelings or redefine our values? Perhaps its time to ask ourselves:

What is your legacy?

How would you like to be remembered?

A man’s favourite donkey fell into a deep precipice;

He couldn’t pull it out no matter how hard he tried;

He therefore decides to bury it alive because the donkey was sure to die.


He started to shovel the soil in from above onto the donkey.

The donkey feels the load of soil as it lands on him, shakes it off, and steps on top of it;

More soil is shovelled by the man onto the donkey from above..


Each time the donkey shakes it off and steps up;

The more the soul was shovelled, the higher the donkey rose;

By noon, the donkey was grazing in green pastures.


What can you learn from this? After shaking off (your problems), and stepping up (learning from them), you will graze in Green Pastures.

Spending too much time on the treadmill and not going anywhere fast? Feel scattered, overwhelmed, frazzled, or fearful?

Truth is, you are an electro-magnetic being and when you are out of sorts, your spirit, the essence of who you are is not fully present.

In turn, making a connection with others, your potential clients is not good, or its not happening. Your message will be lost in a fog of confusion whereby others’ don’t understand what you mean or what you are trying to say to them.

Before going any further, it’s a time for grounding. Here’s some easy ways you can do this:

  • Take a break from your desk and go outside.
  • Take a walk in the park or by a riverside with calming water
  • Feed the ducks
  • Walk your dog
  • Jump up and down or dance to music
  • Hug a tree
  • Smell flowers
  • Go for a massage
  • Massage the soles of your feet

There are lots of simple ways to help you get grounded. It’s simple, but critical if you are to have a clear connection to the people you want to serve.

When you are grounded, you are in your power.

Where does the idea of being perfect come from? Perfectionism is based on the false belief that if we do things perfectly, then we can avoid failure.

It’s also to do with wanting to produce flawless work to earn the approval of others and to be accepted. However, this is unhealthy. It sets us up for failure because we can never live up to the expectations we set for ourselves when we are judging ourselves against what we feel or think is the expectations of someone else.

Far better to recognize the distinct difference between giving something your best shot, rather than trying to be perfect.

Wasting time on trying to get something to a state of perceived perfection is limiting and prevents you from making the progress you would have made had you just done your best. It’s this that makes the difference between failing at something or indeed making it a success.
